Reconsideration of Instructional Materials Process

School receiving complaint shall try to resolve the issue informally,
including an alternative resource.

The Secondary English Language Arts Curriculum Coordinator may
also be contacted to discuss book selections.

LEVEL I

Complainant may file a formal complaint following the Request for Reconsideration of Instructional Resources – Level I.

Upon receipt of the request form, the principal shall form a Reconsideration Committee. Within 10 working days the committee will review the challenged resources in its entirety.

Campus-level committee shall consist of:

  • PTA Rep.
  • A parent at large
  • school librarian
  • 2 teachers
  • Principal
  • Non-school District Employee

LEVEL II

Within 10 working days of receiving the Campus Checklist for Reconsideration, the complainant has the right to appeal any decision of the reconsideration committee to the Superintendent.

Upon receipt of the Request for Reconsideration of Instructional Resources – Level II, the Superintendent shall appoint a Reconsideration Committee. Within 10 working days the committee will review the challenged resources in its entirety.

District-level committee shall consist of:

  • Council of PTA Rep.
  • A parent at large
  • Two community members
  • HS Student Council Rep.
  • school librarian
  • teacher
  • counselor
  • principal
  • Content Area Coordinator
  • Administrative staff

LEVEL III

Within 10 working days the decision of the Level II Reconsideration Committee may be appealed to the Board at Level III.

The Board shall determine whether to place the matter on a future meeting agenda following the Level III filing.

The lack of official action by the Board upholds the administrative decision at Level II.

Once the Board has responded to the appeal as stated above, the matter is concluded.
